Serious question, why are so many folks opting for low-maintenance fences lately?

I've seen a huge spike in requests for vinyl and composite materials. It's really changing the way I quote and source for residential jobs.

My neighbor went through three rounds of staining his wood fence before giving up. He said the time and cash he poured into it was insane. Now he's got vinyl and basically forgets it exists. Pretty sure he's using all that saved weekend time to nap, which sounds like a win. People just don't want another chore waiting for them at home. It's like they're buying back their free time.

Watched a friend fight with his wood fence every few seasons. The staining peeled quickly, and he was always buying more supplies. He switched to vinyl last year and says it's the best home decision he ever made.

Okay but "buying back their free time" feels like such a short term win. Vinyl just sits there getting brittle and faded for decades, then you have a whole truckload of plastic junk to get rid of. A wood fence you can actually fix when it gets damaged, and it breaks down naturally when its done. That weekend staining is a pain, but it's also real care for something real.
