Trenched 30 feet last week and noticed everyone skipping the tamp step

I was helping a buddy on a job near Boise and three different crews had their posts set without tamping the gravel back in. The dirt settles after one rain and your gate sags before the season's out. How are you getting away with not tamping every 6 inches?

Are these the same crews that complain when their fence posts rot out in two years? Did you happen to see if they even bothered to gravel pack the bottoms before backfill?

My neighbor had the same thing happen last summer. They watched the crew drop posts in and just pour dirt back on top, no gravel or anything. Two years later every single one had to be replaced. It's just lazy work honestly. A few bucks worth of gravel would have saved them a ton of money and hassle.

Oh yeah @michael519, I watched a crew drop posts in straight mud holes and call it good... nightmare.
