I bought a $12 stud finder that beeped at everything except the studs.

My drywall patch job turned into a weird art project with six extra holes. What's a better cheap tool that actually works?

Honestly, this is the perfect example of a cheap tool costing you more in the end. I've seen this with so many things, where the bargain version just creates more work and waste. For studs, a simple strong magnet is my go-to. It finds the drywall screws and never lies. You just slide it around until it sticks hard. That $12 finder probably cost you another $20 in spackle and frustration.

I mean, I get the magnet thing, but that $12 finder actually saved me a ton of time. My walls have way more screws than just the stud lines from old pictures and stuff, so the magnet was going off everywhere. The finder beeped for the stud center and I got it first try. Maybe it's just a bad brand, but mine worked fine.
