Moisture testing before glue-down floors saved me a callback recently.
I was putting in glue-down vinyl planks in a basement recently. The homeowner wanted to skip moisture checks to save time. I used my meter and found high moisture levels. We had to install a vapor barrier before proceeding. This added time but prevented future buckling. I’ve noticed a trend of clients rushing this step lately. Now I insist on testing every time. It saves callbacks and keeps the floor lasting longer.

Three years ago I had a basement job buckle because we trusted the concrete was dry enough. The homeowner was furious and I ate the cost of a full replacement. Since then my meter never leaves the truck. It takes two minutes to scan a grid pattern and the reading doesn't lie. That quick check is the cheapest insurance you can buy for a glue down install. Skipping it just hands your profit straight to the problem down the road.

Man, @grantl94, your story hits home! I used to brush off moisture checks thinking they were overkill until a similar disaster cost me a whole weekend redoing a client's kitchen floor. Now I never skip the meter scan, and it's saved my butt more than once. That two-minute grid pattern you mentioned is now part of my setup routine every single time. Learning the hard way stinks, but your post reminds us all why those little steps matter so much.

Yeah, it's crazy how many guys still skip that step. Like, why risk your whole paycheck to save two minutes? The meter gives you a clear yes or no, no guesswork. I've seen floors fail from hidden moisture and it's never pretty. That quick scan is just part of the job now, no question.
