Question about a weird subfloor I found in a 1920s house in Portland

Last month I was pulling up old carpet in a bungalow and found the subfloor was made of 1x6 boards laid diagonally. The homeowner said it was original from 1925. Has anyone else run into this and how did you prep it for new flooring?

Diagonal boards from 1925 are still solid?

Nailed it down flat and laid the new flooring right over it.
