Just found out how much a bad sand mix can cost a shop

I was reading an old trade journal from 2019 and saw a case study from a foundry in Youngstown. They tracked a single week of scrapped castings and found 40% were due to green sand that was off spec, mostly from wrong moisture. That's a huge number of parts just going back into the melt. It made me check our own moisture tests way more often. Has your floor ever had a run of bad sand that caused a major scrap pile?

We switched to daily moisture checks and our scrap rate dropped fast.

How much of a drop did you see? That's a great result... we've been fighting with scrap from humidity for ages.

Buddy of mine had the same issue at his shop, switched to dehumidifiers right by the material storage and said it cut their waste in half within a week. Isn't that the kind of fix you wish you'd tried ages ago?
