Can we talk about the sudden love for milk paint on old oak?
Last week at the shop, a customer brought in a 1920s oak dresser from her house in Spokane and specifically asked for a milk paint finish, which is the third request like that this month. Three years ago, everyone wanted that dark walnut stain on oak, but now it feels like every other project is about getting that soft, chalky look. Has anyone else seen this shift, or is it just my area?

Yeah, that "soft, chalky look" you mentioned is totally the trend right now. I saw a whole article about it in a furniture magazine last month, calling it the "quiet finish" as a pushback against super dark and glossy woods. It makes sense, everyone's been into that light and airy farmhouse style for a while now, and milk paint on oak fits that vibe perfectly. I bet we'll see it everywhere for another year at least.
