Rant: I bought a cheap plastic shelving unit for my garage and it broke in a month

I saw a big plastic shelving unit on sale for $50 at the hardware store and thought it was a steal. I loaded it up with paint cans and tools, maybe 150 pounds total. Last week, I heard a loud crack and the whole middle shelf just gave out, spilling everything. Now I'm out the $50 and have a huge mess to clean up. What's a better, stronger option that won't just snap?

Was it one of those white ones with the little metal pins? I read a whole article about how those plastic shelves have a weight limit way lower than people expect. The plastic gets brittle in garage temps too. You're better off with metal wire shelving or even building simple wood ones from 2x4s. They cost more up front but won't just snap on you.

Been there. Those plastic shelves are junk for anything heavy. Get the heavy duty metal wire shelves from the same store. They cost about $100 but hold 500 pounds per shelf. I've had mine for years loaded with car parts. Zero issues.

Did your friend ever try those plastic shelves? Mine did and his engine block ended up on the floor.
