Learning to fit a new stock taught me not to trust my eye for straight lines

I eyeballed the inletting and now the rifle sits at a funny angle. It shoots fine, but looks like it's leaning into a strong wind!

Ugh, that's the worst feeling. We've all been there thinking 'yeah, that looks about right' only to realize our eyes are terrible judges. I finally broke down and bought a cheap machinist's square for stuff like that, because my 'good enough' was never actually good enough.

What brand of machinist's square did you end up getting? I've been looking at the cheap ones online but worry they might not be square either. How do you check if yours is actually accurate?

Yeah, that worry about cheap squares not being square is spot on. I read on a machining forum about a simple way to check with a surface plate. You put the square against a flat surface, scribe a line next to it, then flip the square over. If the second line doesn't match the first, your square is off. It sounds basic but it really shows even small errors. I had to do this with my last square and it was eye opening. What kind of projects are you using it for?
