Vent: Took me 45 minutes to peel 3 sweet potatoes because I forgot to microwave them first

I was making a quick mash to go with some chicken thighs I found in the freezer. Grabbed 3 sweet potatoes out of the bin and started peeling them raw with a veggie peeler. After about 10 minutes of struggling with the tough skin I was already frustrated. Then I remembered you can microwave them for 2 minutes to soften the skin. I stopped and tried that but by then I had already gouged out half the flesh on the first one. Total time from start to finish for that stupid mash was like 45 minutes when it should have been 15. Has anyone else run into a weird cooking shortcut that actually saves way more time than you expect?

...and then you realize half the work comes from the peeler being dull, not the potato. I had that exact same meltdown last fall with butternut squash, stabbed myself in the thumb with a paring knife because I was too stubborn to nuke it first. Ended up with squash puree all over my counter and a bandaid that kept peeling off while I was stirring. What really gets me is how nobody warns you that sweet potato skin fights back like it's got something personal against you. Your mileage may vary but I've started just giving up and leaving the skin on if I'm mashing it anyway, adds a little texture and saves my sanity.

Disagree entirely, a sharp peeler makes quick work of any squash without the microwave drama.

Wait, isn't nuking squash first a microwave thing or did you mean the oven?
