Took me 6 hours to hang a single bird feeder in my backyard

Everyone talks about how simple it is to put up a bird feeder. Just screw it to a tree or a post, right? Wrong. I bought this nice metal hook one from a local hardware store in Portland last month. Thought I'd be done in 30 minutes tops. But my yard is all rocks and clay, so digging a hole for the post took forever. Then the hook bent under the weight of the seed bag. I had to run back to the store for a sturdier pole. Then the squirrels figured out how to climb it in 10 minutes flat. So I bought a baffle, but it was the wrong size. By the time I finally got the thing up and filled with seed, the sun was going down. Has anyone else had a simple outdoor project turn into an all day thing like this?

Sounds like the squirrels won round one.

you've got it backwards. six hours well spent sounds like a success story to me. between the bent hook, the wrong baffle, and the squirrel invasion, you basically field tested everything before the birds even showed up. now you know exactly what works and what doesn't. that first week of watching chickadees show up without a single squirrel theft? that's the payoff. the birds don't care how long it took, they just care that the food is there.
