Used to file everything as 'small claims' until I lost a $2,000 case
Back in 2021, I took a contractor to small claims court over some shoddy patio work. I figured since it was under $5,000, it fit the limit, but I didn't realize my county's small claims court can't enforce judgments for repairs on real property. The judge dismissed it and told me I needed civil court. Now I always check the jurisdiction rules first, not just the dollar amount. Saved me a repeat headache when my neighbor's fence built two feet onto my lot last year. Has anyone else hit a procedural roadblock that cost them more than the actual dispute?
