Can we talk about why everyone swears by boiling water for cleaning paint brushes?

I always thought hot water was the way to go for latex brushes until my buddy at the hardware store told me to try cold water instead. He said hot water actually bakes the paint into the bristles if you wait too long, which made me skeptical but I gave it a shot after a job last Tuesday. Now I'm split because cold water worked way better on a set of Purdy brushes I cleaned, but warm water still seems faster for dried-on spots. Anyone have a solid rule for when to use which temperature?

@campbell.robin I'll stick with lukewarm water and hope my brushes don't file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau.
