Guy at the hardware store saved my squeaky door trick

I had this old wooden gate on my fence that would scream every time you opened it. Tried vegetable oil, WD40, even candle wax, nothing worked for more than a day. Last weekend I was at the Ace Hardware on 12th street buying paint and an old guy stocking shelves heard me complaining about it. He said try a dry bar of soap, just rub it on the hinges where they pivot. I thought he was messing with me but I had a half-used bar of Irish Spring in my bathroom. Rubbed it on both hinges three days ago and the gate opens silent as a ghost. I opened it probably fifteen times yesterday just to hear nothing. Has anyone else got a weird fix like that that actually works better than the fancy stuff?

Had a similar thing with my car door hinge a few years back (it sounded like a wounded cat), tried every spray in the book and a neighbor suggested a crayon. Rubbed a blue one on there and the noise vanished for months, weirdest thing that actually worked.
