TIL my grandpa's old hand-crank drill works better than my new cheap one

I was over at my uncle's shed last Saturday helping him clear out junk, and he handed me this rusty brace drill from the 1940s with no cord or battery in sight. I figured it'd be useless, but after 10 minutes of cranking through a pine board, it actually cut smoother and didn't strip like my $15 plastic drill did from the hardware store. Has anyone else had an old tool surprise them like that?

Got the same thing happenin with my granddad's old hammer. Bought a cheap one from the big box store and the head flew off on the third swing. That old wooden handled one he had still nails straight and doesn't wobble, it's like they actually made stuff to last back then.

Oh man, same thing happened to me with a shovel I got at the hardware store. I ended up taking my dad's old one to a guy who rehandles tools for like fifteen bucks and it's been perfect ever since. Might be worth looking into if you've got the time.
