Why do weekend boaters assume we have all the answers on the spot?

Had a guy at the marina grill me about his engine misfire while I was grabbing a coffee. He didn't even bring the manual or tell me the model year, so how am I supposed to help?

My buddy Jake over at Cedar Point Marina had a similar thing happen last season. Some guy waved him down while he was fueling up, asking about a weird vibration without even mentioning the hull material. In my experience, you gotta have the basics to even start guessing.

'You gotta have the basics,' but maybe it's not so serious.

Honestly, I feel this in my soul. Last season, I spent twenty minutes troubleshooting a 'critical alarm' only to realize I'd accidentally sat on the key fob and triggered the panic button. My own boat, and I'm there looking like a complete novice because I skipped the most obvious check. It's a humbling reminder that without even the basic context, we're all just guessing wildly. So when a stranger expects a full diagnosis over coffee, I just laugh and point to my own dumb moment. That kind of thing keeps me from getting too cocky about my so-called expertise.
