My attempt to verify a Star Wars blaster prop took 6 months

I bought a resin cast of Han Solo's DL-44 from a guy at a convention last March. It looked perfect but I kept hitting dead ends trying to track down its origin. I emailed three different prop forums and two auction houses before someone finally recognized the serial number on the scope. Turns out it was a screen used stunt piece from Empire Strikes Back! Has anyone else spent way longer than expected checking if a prop is real?

Got a buddy who spent eight months trying to verify a cast of the One Ring from Lord of the Rings. He emailed every prop collector in New Zealand and finally found out it was from a fan film shoot. The ring was a custom piece made for that one weekend and worth basically nothing.

Honestly, that's a wild ride but I gotta say it's a little weird how much people get hung up on proving something is "real." Like, at the end of the day you got a cool blaster that looks amazing and you know the story behind it, so does the serial number really change how much you enjoy having it on your shelf? Most folks at a con can't tell the difference anyway, they just want to see something that looks like the movie.
