The air pressure trick I learned from a desert racer

Last month I was at a trailhead in Moab and overheard some guy in a beat up buggy telling his friend to air down to 12 psi for the slickrock. I always ran 18 psi thinking lower meant popped beads but I tried 12 on my Jeep and the grip on those domes was insane. Has anyone else messed around with going way lower than the usual 15 psi for hardpack stuff?

I always thought 18 was the magic number to keep beads seated, but after watching a buddy crawl over stuff at 10 psi without any issues I gave it a shot. Total game changer on those smooth domes, the tire wraps around the rock so much better.
