I was 8 miles from pavement in 105 degree heat with no spare after the sidewall let go, so I stuffed the gap with a cut-up floor mat and bailing wire, patched it with tarp straps, limped to a truck stop in 20 minute bursts, and a guy there told me his 1996 jeep did the same thing, which is when I realized 'self recovery' actually means 'how creative can you get with junk in your bed' - anyone else carry a weird emergency kit that saved a trip?

Three years of building and I still miss the old trail rig

Back in 2021 I had this beat up Cherokee on 33s that went everywhere with zero fuss. Last month I finally finished the new truck, full long travel and 37s, cost me about 11 grand in parts alone. But out on the rocks near Moab last week I kept thinking how the old one never needed winching or a spotter. Anyone else ever feel like the simpler builds actually end up being the better wheelers?

Tried beadlock wheels for the first time on my Jeep last weekend

I swapped out my regular wheels for a set of beadlocks on my 2016 JK right before a trip to Moab. I figured they'd help me air down super low without losing a bead on the rocks. But what I didn't expect was how much road noise they added on the drive out there. The hum was pretty bad at highway speeds, like a constant drone in the cab. After three days of trailing, I learned that beadlocks are awesome offroad but a pain for daily driving. Has anyone else dealt with that tradeoff and found a good middle ground?

Just found out my old Jeep's track bar bracket was cracked for like 3 years before I noticed

I was under there last weekend swapping out a rusty shock mount and spotted a hairline crack running clean through the bracket on the passenger side, been wheeling that thing in Moab twice and never knew it was about to let go, has anyone else run into hidden damage like this that just sits there waiting to snap?

Why are we still building rigs with solid front axles for rock crawling?

Three years ago at Moab I watched a guy in a $60k Jeep on solid axles get stuck on a simple ledge, while a buddy's IFS truck walked right over it. My own 1990 Toyota pickup on leaf springs has flexed out fine for years, but last month I swapped to coilovers and now I wonder if the old design is mostly hype. Are we sticking with solid axles for tradition and durability, or is IFS actually better for modern offroad use?

The air pressure trick I learned from a desert racer

Last month I was at a trailhead in Moab and overheard some guy in a beat up buggy telling his friend to air down to 12 psi for the slickrock. I always ran 18 psi thinking lower meant popped beads but I tried 12 on my Jeep and the grip on those domes was insane. Has anyone else messed around with going way lower than the usual 15 psi for hardpack stuff?

I finally spent the money on a good winch line and it saved my buddy's truck

I always ran the cheap steel cable on my winch because it was like $60 versus $200 for synthetic. Last month during a mud run near Austin my cable snapped under load and whipped back at my friend's front bumper. It put a dent in his fender and nearly took out his headlight (thankfully nobody got hurt). I picked up a synthetic line from a local shop the next day for $180 and it's way easier to handle too. Has anyone else had a winch line fail on them or am I just lucky it wasn't worse?

Just realized cheap shocks aren't worth it after my Jeep almost flipped last weekend

For like 3 years I ran the cheapest gas shocks I could find on my old Cherokee, figured they all do the same thing right? Well last Saturday I was coming down this rocky section near Sedona and the rear end just started bouncing like crazy after a dip. I hit a bump and the whole truck felt like it was gonna slide off the trail. My buddy Jeff was behind me in his built Tacoma and he told me later he thought I was gonna roll it. That scared me enough to drop real money on some Bilstein 5100s this week. The difference is insane, like the truck actually stays planted now. Has anyone else done this upgrade and felt like an idiot for waiting so long?

Swore cheap lift spacers were fine until my buddy's truck broke an axle

I ran budget 2-inch spacers on my '04 Tacoma for like 3 years with no issues, but my friend put the same ones on his Ranger and snapped a rear axle after 6 months of light trails in Sedona. Now I'm paranoid about my own setup and wondering if I should just save up for real coils. Anyone else have spacer horror stories or am I just overthinking this?

Thought my buddy was crazy for running beadlocks on a daily driver

Guy I wheel with up near Payson spent $2,500 on beadlocks for his Tacoma that he drives to work everyday. I told him he was just asking for tire balancing headaches and leaky beads. After watching him crawl over some sharp lava rocks north of Flagstaff last month where I slashed a sidewall on my regular rims, I'm starting to see the appeal. He just aired down to 8 psi and walked right over stuff I was bouncing and slipping on. Has anyone else caved and daily driven beadlocks, or am I still right to be skeptical about the highway wear?

Dude had no recovery gear, no winch, and his bumper was already hanging off after the first mile. Has anyone else seen people show up way underprepared at a famous trail?

My $20 harbor freight winch actually saved my truck today

I was out on a trail near Sedona yesterday and got high centered on a rock... totally my fault for taking a bad line. Figured I'd test out that cheap winch I bought on a whim a few months back. It pulled me out in about 5 minutes, no struggle at all. Thought for sure it would burn out on the first real use, but nope... anyone else had luck with budget gear holding up when it matters?

Spent $600 on a cheap lift kit and learned the hard way

Back in 2018 I figured I'd save some cash and bought a no-name 4 inch lift for my old Jeep Cherokee. Installation was a nightmare, bolts didn't line up right, and I had to drill out three holes anyway. After about 6 months the rear springs sagged almost 2 inches and the bushings were totally shot. Ended up paying a shop $400 to rip it all out and put in a proper Rough Country kit. Anyone else get burned by going too cheap on suspension parts?

Realized my skid plate bolts were loose after a trip to Moab

I was coming down Hells Revenge last month and heard this nasty grinding sound that made my stomach drop. Pulled over and found three of my skid plate bolts had backed out, with one just dangling there. Has anyone else had luck with using blue Loctite on those, or is there a better trick to keep them tight?

Vent: Saw a guy's Jeep on the Rubicon Trail last weekend running street tires

I was out on the Rubicon Trail near Georgetown last Saturday and watched this dude in a lifted JK try to crawl over the slab section with what looked like stock highway tires. He was spinning and slipping everywhere while a stock Tacoma on some half-dead mud tires just walked past him. It got me thinking - are people too focused on lift kits and bumpers when the real grip comes from rubber? I've seen builds with 4 inches of suspension lift and tiny 33s that struggle, while my buddy's XJ on 35s with no lift cruises through. Which matters more to you guys - getting the tire setup right first or making it look tall and aggressive?

Check your shackle ratings before you trust them

I was getting ready for a trip to Moab next month and decided to double check all my recovery gear. Turns out the cheap shackles I bought off Amazon 2 years ago are only rated for 4,750 lbs even though the listing said 18,000. I found a stamp on the side that said G80 not G100 and looked it up on a forum. How many of us are running gear that's way weaker than we think?

My first tube bumper versus the one I built last summer, night and day difference

I mean, way back in 2018 I bought this cheap 'universal' tube bumper off Amazon for like 200 bucks. It bolted on okay but the winch mount was so thin you could see it flex when you pulled anything heavy. I lived with it for about two years until I finally got tired of the rust spots. Last summer I decided to build my own from scratch using 1.75 inch DOM tubing and a 3/8 inch plate for the winch tray. Cost me about 450 in materials plus a weekend of welding in my buddy's garage. The difference in ground clearance alone is almost 4 inches more than that old bumper. Has anyone else gone from buying cheap bolt ons to building their own stuff?

Spent two years using a hi-lift jack as a bottle jack on my XJ before my buddy said something

I was at a trail ride near Moab last month and popped a bead on a rock. Pulled out my hi-lift to jack up the axle and my buddy just stared at me. He showed me you can use the hi-lift as a bottle jack by flipping the foot sideways and using the base plate flat. Felt like an idiot. Anyone else find out they were using basic recovery gear completely backwards?

Shoutout to hitting 30 psi on my trail tires... but now I'm second-guessing everything

Honestly, I finally aired up to 30 psi after running 18 psi for months and my MPG jumped 3 miles per gallon, but the ride on washboard roads got way rougher. Is highway stability worth losing that cushy grip on loose gravel, or am I just overthinking this?

Old timer at the trailhead fixed my shock mount with a zip tie

I was out at Hollister Hills last Saturday and blew a rear shock mount on my XJ about halfway through the Rattlesnake trail. Had no spare parts and was ready to call for a tow. This guy maybe 70 years old rolls up in beat up Samurai and asks if I need a hand. He digs through his glovebox and comes out with six heavy duty zip ties. He showed me how to wrap them around the shock and the bracket in a cross pattern to hold it in place. Took maybe 10 minutes and the thing held for the whole drive home on the highway at 70 mph. I offered him $20 but he just said pass it forward next time you see someone stuck. Has anyone else had a random stranger save your day out on the trail?

Had to pick between a lunchbox locker or a full selectable

Went with the lunchbox for my Dana 30 because I didn't want to drop $900 on an ARB. Thing clanks and pops like crazy in parking lots, but on the trail it just works. Anyone else deal with that constant noise or did I mess up?

My front axle u-joint gave up 12 miles from pavement

Was out on Old Stage Road near Boulder last weekend, just a mellow trail nothing crazy, and I heard this CLUNK coming from the front end. At first I thought I just smacked a rock but it kept happening every time I turned. Pulled over and the u-joint on the passenger side was completely toast, caps were gone and the cross was just flopping around. Had to limp it back to the highway in front wheel drive only, which was sketchy on those loose switchbacks. Got it home and pulled the axle shaft and the needle bearings were just dust basically. Must have been going bad for a while and I never noticed because on-road it was fine. Replaced both sides with Spicer u-joints this time and greased the hell out of them. Anyone else ever had a u-joint fail without any warning signs at all?
