The amount of time I wasted on that one Frogger level in the arcade is insane

Tbh, I spent like 40 bucks over a summer at the local pizza place trying to beat the same Frogger level. This was back in '94, and I could never get past the third set of logs without falling in. Now I just load it up on a cheap emulator on my phone and beat the whole game in like 15 minutes with save states. The difference is I actually know the timing now, but back then every attempt felt like a new disaster. What really got me is how the arcade version had that timer that made you panic, while today I can just pause and take a breather. Has anyone else gone back to an old arcade game and realized how much easier it is without the pressure of a quarter on the line?

Dont you hate when you finally master something and realize you were just throwing money at a panic attack? I used to swear that Frogger had it out for me personally. Now I realize it was just me flailing with sweaty palms while a timer beeped in my ear. Funny thing is, I can beat the same level without even blinking these days. Guess I was paying a quarter for the experience of losing my cool, not for the actual game.

Is it really mastery if you just had to panic your way through it enough times for your brain to finally give up and learn the pattern? I get what you're saying though. There's something about that sweaty quarter slot machine feeling that makes the win hit different. Maybe the panic was part of the charm, you know? You paid for the adrenaline rush and got a free game lesson on the side. Now you're cool as a cucumber and the magic is gone. Kinda makes you wonder if getting good killed the fun.
