That time a server told me I was 'that customer' for asking about specials before 5pm

I used to always walk into a local diner around 4:30pm and ask if they had any early bird specials or happy hour deals on apps. Last month, a waitress at Rosie's Grill in Tulsa straight up told me, 'You know, asking that at 4:30 makes you look cheap instead of smart.' It kind of stung, but she explained their system: specials don't kick in until 5pm, and asking early just annoys the kitchen. Now I just chill and wait the extra 30 minutes, and I usually get better service too. Has anyone else had a restaurant worker give them feedback that changed how they order?

That time a neighbor's garden party changed my drying rack setup

Last spring I was at my neighbor Carol's little garden get-together and noticed she had all her herbs hanging from an old wooden ladder propped against her shed. I mean it looked so cozy and functional at the same time. I went home and tried the same thing with a cheap ladder I got for $8 at a yard sale, now I dry lavender and mint right in my kitchen corner. Has anyone else repurposed something weird for drying or displaying stuff?

My coworker told me to switch to a dotted notebook and I finally see why

I was using a lined notebook for my bullet journal for over a year, and my coworker Jamie kept saying dots would make layouts easier. Last month I finally bought a dotted Leuchtturm and everything from my habit tracker to my weekly spread came out way cleaner. Has anyone else had trouble making the switch from lines to dots or is it just me?

Dueling opinions on cutterhead teeth - cheap vs premium

I dropped $150 on a set of aftermarket teeth for my 12-inch dredge in Galveston last month. They wore down after 20 hours. My buddy swears by the OEM ones at $400 a set but says they last 80 hours easy. Which side do you lean on for sand and shell jobs?

Tried making a lentil soup from scratch and it turned into weird mush

I thought I'd save money by using dried lentils instead of canned. Followed a recipe I found online, soaked them for 2 hours like it said, then simmered for 45 minutes. By the time I added my veggies, everything was just this brown sludge. No texture at all. My kids took one look and refused to eat it. I learned I should probably check the lentil type next time - the bag just said "brown lentils" but I think they were red ones that break down fast. Anyone else have a lentil disaster or know a foolproof way to keep them from turning to paste?

Warning: That one perfect week at work actually cost me my sanity

Last March I had a full 5 day stretch where every single deal closed early, clients were happy, and my boss actually said 'great job' out loud, but then the following Monday I came in to find three of those deals had fallen apart because I missed a key clause in contracts and now I double check every single line before I hit send, has anyone else had a week that went too smooth only to blow up later?

Had a cedar post snap clean in half on a job in Bend last Thursday

Was setting a 6-foot privacy section and the 4x4 just gave way about a foot from the base. We were using a standard post pounder, nothing crazy. Had to dig out the whole thing and reset with a new post, which set us back almost two hours. Anyone have a good trick for checking cedar for hidden splits before you set it?

Unpopular opinion: I used to think digging fast was the goal until a site in New Mexico changed my mind

For my first three field seasons, I just wanted to move dirt and find stuff, so I'd blast through layers with a trowel. Last summer at a Pueblo site near Taos, my supervisor made me spend a full day on a single 1x1 meter unit, documenting every tiny change in soil color. It felt painfully slow at first. But that careful work revealed a hearth we would have totally destroyed with my old method. Now I spend twice as long on each unit, but the data is actually useful. Anyone else have a method they completely flipped on after a specific dig?

Tried pre-finishing panels before final assembly on a kitchen job last month

Jaw dropped when I read "cut my sanding time by like half." That's wild. I've been finishing after assembly for years and I always end up sanding in those tight corners where the brush can barely reach. Never thought to just do it before putting it all together. Labeling everything sounds like a pain but I bet it beats the alternative. Might actually try this on my next cabinet job.
