Used to mash buttons randomly in Tekken 3, now I actually learn combos frame by frame

Back in 1998 I just spammed Eddy Gordo's kicks and won half my fights. Last month I spent 3 hours in practice mode learning a 10-hit chain for Jin. Has anyone else gone back to an old fighting game and realized how much more patient you are now?

Spent 3 hours learning a 10-hit chain" - that's dedication, man. But here's what I wanna know. Did that 3 hours actually make you better in real matches, or do you still freeze up and go back to mashing when the pressure hits? Because I can lab combos for days, but the second I'm in a close round with someone good, my brain shuts off and I'm jumping and hitting random buttons again. How do you make the practice actually stick when it counts?

Training mode is a trap because it teaches your hands without your brain. You gotta run those same combos in casual matches with the explicit goal of landing them, even if you eat damage for it. Eventually your panic response becomes muscle memory too, and that's when the lab work actually shows up.
