Serious question: do you recap old caps or leave them be in vintage radios?
I've been working on a 1960s Philco tube radio from a thrift store in Omaha. I keep going back and forth on whether to replace all the old electrolytic capacitors or just swap the ones that test bad. Some folks swear you gotta recap everything before powering up, says it prevents damage to the transformers and tubes. But then my buddy Jim says he's never replaced a single cap on his 1950s Zenith and it still plays fine after 70 years. He argues that original parts keep the sound more authentic and that recapping changes the character. I pulled out my multimeter last night and half the caps tested within tolerance, so now I'm second-guessing myself. Has anyone else wrestled with this decision on a specific model or brand?

Honestly, the thing nobody talks about is that those old paper and wax caps don't just fail electrically, they physically break down and absorb moisture over decades. I've pulled caps out of old Philcos that looked fine on a meter but were basically little sponges soaking up humidity, shifting the bias on tubes and making the audio sound muffled. Jim's Zenith might still work, but I'd bet my lunch money it sounds duller than a factory fresh set because those original caps are dragging the tone down bit by bit. Ngl, testing tolerance is a good start, but it doesn't catch the long term chemical decay inside those old components, especially the electrolytics that dry out. Tbh, if you don't recap it now, you might get away with it for a while, but you're rolling the dice every time you flip that power switch, and a shorted cap can take out a hard-to-find output transformer that you'll never replace for cheap.

Wait, hold on. You're telling me you pulled caps out that literally felt like sponges? That's wild. I've seen the wax coating crack and flake off, but I never thought about moisture just soaking into the damn things like a paper towel. Were they actually wet to the touch, or just soft and crumbly? I've got a 1948 Zenith console I've been babying for five years, and now I'm paranoid every time I hear a little hum. Makes you wonder how many guys are out there bragging about their "all original" radios that are basically running on soggy paper inside.
