Struggling to create a realistic budget for my upcoming Eastern Europe backpacking journey
I'm finally taking the plunge and planning a three-week backpacking trip through Eastern Europe next spring. I've saved about $2,000 so far, but I'm nervous about hidden expenses like accommodations and transportation. Does anyone have a solid budgeting template or method for tracking daily spending while on the road? I'd love to hear how others manage to enjoy travel without breaking the bank.

Honestly I've never found strict daily budgets helpful for backpacking, they just stress me out when things inevitably go over. Like last year in Romania, I missed a cheap train and had to take a pricier bus, but it led to meeting this cool group hiking in the Carpathians. I just track my total weekly spending instead, so a surprise hostel cost one day can be balanced by cooking meals the next few. You've got a decent fund, just prioritize the experiences you really want and let the rest be flexible, lol.

Tracking weekly totals definitely reduces the pressure compared to daily limits. In my experience, setting a loose weekly allowance lets you absorb unexpected costs without guilt, like when a festival in Bulgaria meant splurging on street food but skipping museum entries. It encourages adapting to opportunities rather than sticking to a rigid plan, which often leads to more memorable trips. Your fund is there to enable adventures, not restrict them.

Referencing the weekly totals idea, my buddy learned that lesson hard in Albania. He blew half his weekly fund on a last minute car rental to reach some coastal cliffs, then survived on grocery store bread and cheese for three days. Ended up scoring a free ferry ticket from a hostel mate, which balanced it all out. Saw Skanderbeg Square and a secluded beach town he'd never have planned.
