Rant: I spent ten years using the wrong spark plug gap on my old F-150 before my neighbor's kid pointed it out at a cookout.
He just casually mentioned the factory spec changed after 1986 and I had been running the gap too tight the whole time, which explained the rough idle and why I was burning through plugs every season, so has anyone else found one simple overlooked thing that made a huge difference?

Nah I gotta push back on this one a little. A ten year gap issue that only showed up as rough idle and burning plugs? That tells me the truck was running lean more than anything else. Factory spec changes are real but they're usually a half thousandth or something tiny, not enough to make that big of a difference unless you were way off. Sounds more like you had a vacuum leak or a bad distributor cap all along and the gap was just a coincidence. I've seen guys blame spark plug gap for everything when really they got a worn out ignition system or dirty injectors.
