Overheard someone call balcony gardening "just pots on a concrete slab" and it got me thinking

I was at a hardware store last weekend and this guy was telling his friend my setup was basically a sad collection of pots. He said it like growing food requires actual ground dirt to count. I just stood there holding my cherry tomato plant that produced 30 tomatoes last summer from a 12 inch pot. My peppers did fine too. Has anyone else had people write off your roof or balcony garden like it doesn't count?

He's right though. Buckets on concrete aren't real gardening.

I had a similar thing happen with my neighbor, and @sam_anderson, I gotta say my 15 tomato plants on a concrete patio last year proved him wrong. They actually did better than some in-ground gardens I've tried, especially with a good self-watering setup. Just depends on how much you put into it, your mileage may vary but don't let anyone write off your setup.
