Took me 6 months to realize I was cutting cans wrong

I've been making soda can flowers for about a year now and I always wondered why my petals looked jagged and jagged no matter how careful I was. Last week I noticed a video where the person was cutting from the bottom of the can toward the top, not side to side like I was doing. Turns out the aluminum grain runs vertical and cutting against it makes everything fray. Now my petals come out smooth on the first try. Anybody else have a dumb AHA moment like this after months of doing it the hard way?

The grain direction thing was a game changer for me too, except with a different craft. I spent like eight months trying to get smooth edges on cut vinyl for my car decals and they always came out fuzzy. Turns out I was cutting against the grain of the vinyl backing, not with it. I switched to cutting top to bottom instead of left to right and suddenly everything was clean. It's one of those things that feels so obvious after you know it, but nobody tells you upfront. I still kick myself thinking about all those wasted sheets.

I actually read an article a while back about how wood grain and even paper grain affects different crafts. It mentioned something like 70 percent of people don't check grain direction at all when they start a new project. I thought that was wild but then I realized I was probably one of those people for years without knowing it. Makes you wonder how many other little tricks are out there that nobody talks about until you mess up five times first.
