Comparison of DIY acoustic panels vs store bought ones saved me $200
I spent six months using foam panels from Amazon for my bedroom podcast setup. The sound still had this hollow ring to it that drove me crazy. Last month I built my own panels using rockwool and 1x4 pine frames for about $40 total. The difference in vocal clarity hit me on the first recording - no more echo, no more muddiness. Has anyone else made the switch and noticed a big change in their recordings?

My basement studio had that same hollow box sound for way too long with the foam panels. I actually tried using old moving blankets tacked to the walls before I built my own rockwool panels, which was a complete disaster because they just absorbed the bass wrong. Once I switched to 4 inch thick Roxul Safe'n'Sound in wooden frames with fabric wrap, my mixes started translating way better to car speakers and earbuds. I will say the worst part was cutting the rockwool without getting itchy everywhere, but the tradeoff was worth it. Now I catch myself walking into other people's untreated rooms and just cringing at how bad their vocals must sound on mic.

Foam isn't useless but rockwool just works way better for vocals hands down.
