That 60 year old furnace filter finally gave up on me Saturday

I went to swap it out and the thing basically crumbled in my hands like a dry leaf. Had to vacuum up a layer of black dust from the floor before I could even put the new one in. Has anyone else dealt with an ancient filter that just disintegrates?

Oh wow, I gotta say I think you're kind of lucky that thing actually lasted that long at all. A 60 year old filter probably did its job for decades and just got replaced way too late, not really the filter's fault. Sounds like it was well past due for a change and you got your money's worth out of it honestly.

Yeah, you're right about the "did its job for decades" part. I've seen this exact thing with old furnace filters too. People forget they're not meant to last forever and just leave them in. But here's the thing, even though the filter was old, the real problem was probably that it was so clogged it made the whole system work way harder than it should have. That's why it finally gave out. I'd bet the motor overheated from all that extra strain. If you're going to push a filter that long, at least check it every six months to see if it needs a quick rinse or swap. It's cheap insurance compared to replacing a whole unit.
