Stopped by a vintage clock repair shop in Portland and everyone there swore by ultrasonic cleaners

I think theyre overhyped for most clock movements, especially ones with painted dials, because the vibration can chip old enamel. Has anyone else had a delicate piece get wrecked by one of those machines?

That really stinks to hear. Ive seen a few enamel dials get that spiderweb cracking from the vibration and it breaks your heart every time. Did the shop warn you about the risk before they ran it?

Hate to be that person but it's actually not from vibration. Enamel spiderwebbing happens from thermal shock or aging, not machine work. The shop probably should have explained that before they touched it though, right?
