Shoutout to the guy who taught me to boil cart pins in distilled water
I used to scrub contacts with alcohol and a toothpick for 20 minutes a pop, but after trying boiling for 5 seconds on a crusty Mega Man 2 cart last month, it booted first try. Has anyone else noticed older cartridges with battery corrosion respond way better to heat than to scraping?

Make sure you're using distilled water specifically - tap water will leave mineral deposits that can cause even more problems down the road. Found that out the hard way with a copy of Castlevania.

Yeah, that "found out the hard way" part hits close to home. I tried tap water on a Sega Genesis game once and ended up with this weird cloudy film that actually made the pins worse. Took me three more rounds with alcohol to fix it. So yeah, @price.tyler is spot on. Distilled water is cheap enough that it's not worth rolling the dice, especially with rarer games where the labels are fragile too.
