Bought a $3 thrift store sweater just to unravel the yarn

Last weekend I saw this chunky wool sweater at a Salvation Army in Ohio for $3. The color was this perfect burnt orange I've been hunting for months. I figured even if the yarn was a dud, I was only out pocket change. Got it home, snipped the seams, and started unraveling. Ended up with over 400 yards of continuous yarn, enough for a whole scarf. The fibers were in way better shape than I expected too, no pilling or breaks. Anyone else salvage yarn from old clothes or am I just cheap?

Oh man, that's awesome! I did the same thing last winter with a giant cable knit sweater I found at Goodwill for $4. It was this faded olive green color that I wasn't crazy about, but the yarn was this super soft merino blend. I unraveled it and got close to 500 yards. I dyed the whole bunch with some Rit dye and made a beanie and fingerless gloves. Best $4 I ever spent.
