My cat figured out the lever door handle in 3 days flat

I got one of those lever style handles because my old knob broke. My cat Boots just stared at it for like an hour the first day. Then on day 3 I hear the bedroom door creak open at 4am and there he is. He jumps up, hangs his whole weight on the lever with his front paws, and swings it down. How do I even teach him to not do this at night? Has anyone else dealt with a cat who learns door tricks way too fast?

Oh man, this is 100% my life right now. My cat Pixel figured out the lever handles in like two days and now he just casually lets himself into any room he wants. Honestly, it's kind of terrifying because he's figured out the front door too and I had to put a childproof lock on it. Tbh, the only thing that worked for me was flipping the handle up so it's vertical instead of horizontal when I go to bed. I know that sounds dumb but it breaks the whole leverage thing for them. Ngl, I also tried putting a heavy shoe on the floor in front of the door so he couldn't pull it open far enough to slip through, and that helped a lot. But yeah, once they learn it, they never forget.

Flip the handle up. That's actually the problem not the solution. You're giving them a challenge. Cats love that stuff. Makes it a game.
