One comment about the laugh track on Saved by the Bell made me rethink the whole show
I was watching the marathon last weekend and my buddy said 'listen how forced those laughs are' and now I can't unhear it. It's jarring how often they cut to that canned sound even during quiet moments. Has anyone else had a random observation ruin a 90s show for them?

Actually I think Saved by the Bell didn't really use a laugh track... they filmed in front of a live studio audience for most of the episodes. The timing of the laughs can still feel weird because the audience was told when to react by a guy with a sign.

A buddy of mine actually worked the laugh sign for a season of a sitcom back in the 90s. He said it's a weird gig because you're basically holding up a big cardboard sign that says "LAUGH" or "CLAP" and the audience watches you like hawks. He told me one night a guy in the front row kept yelling "that wasn't funny!" every time he raised the sign.
