Found out an O-ring can cost $800 if you install it wrong

I was looking through a maintenance log from a 737 job we did last spring and saw a note about a $800 charge just for an O-ring replacement on a hydraulic line. Turns out the guy used the wrong size by like 0.01 inches and it caused a slow leak that grounded the plane for a day. I always thought O-rings were cheap and easy to swap, but now I double-check every spec before I seat one. Has anyone else had a tiny mistake turn into a big bill like that?

Happened to me on a fuel line once. Oversized the O-ring by a hair trying to get a better seal, but it pinched and cracked within a week. Cost us a full tank dump and a tow. Now I keep a micrometer in my tool bag just for those jobs.

Messing up an O-ring is just part of learning the trade. Honestly, $800 sounds cheap for a lesson that sticks with you forever. You can't put a price on knowing exactly which spec works for your bird, and that guy probably never makes that same mistake again. If you're not breaking a few O-rings and paying for it, you're not actually getting your hands dirty enough. I'd rather have a $800 mistake once than a lifetime of always second-guessing every part. Sometimes you gotta pay the stupid tax to really lock in the knowledge.
