Wasted $400 on a fake wood floor refinishing kit last summer

I spent a whole weekend sanding and staining my living room floor in Lethbridge with one of those $40 kits from the hardware store, and by November the finish was peeling up in sheets near the baseboards, has anyone else had that cheap polyurethane fail after the first cold snap?

Yeah but you probably didn't let each coat dry long enough before the next one.

Oh man, that's brutal. I gotta say though, @ray_king might be onto something about the drying time, but I actually think the bigger problem is those kits don't account for how cold and dry Lethbridge gets compared to other places. The polyurethane shrinks way faster than the wood in that climate and just pops off. I had a buddy in Edmonton build a whole new deck and use a cheap waterproofing stain and it flaked off in one winter too. It's not just you, the climate here really messes with those budget finishes.
