Warning: 3AM pipe burst in the North Valley, check your crawl space now
Woke up at 3 AM to water running somewhere. Thought it was the neighbor's sprinklers. Nope. My master bath feed line split right at the shutoff valve. Water was pouring through the ceiling into the hallway. By the time I killed the main, we had about 40 gallons in the garage and soaked insulation under the house. Plumber said it was a 20 year old galvanized stub that finally gave out. Cost me $850 for the emergency call plus $300 to replace the line. If you bought a house built before 1990 in Albuquerque, go look at your exposed pipes in the crawl space today. Any green crust or rust spots? That's your warning. Has anyone else had a random pipe fail on a cold night with no freeze warning?

That green crust line is the exact thing I found on mine last year. It was on the hot water side, right where the pipe comes up through the slab. Did the plumber say anything about the rest of your lines being close to failing too, or was it just that one spot? I've been wondering if I should just replace the whole run now instead of waiting for the next one to pop.
