Changed my tune on expired film after seeing a friend's roll from 1998

I always thought expired film was just a gimmick for weird colors, but my buddy developed a roll of Kodak Gold that expired in 2001 (found at a thrift shop) and the muted pastels were actually gorgeous. Has anyone else been surprised by a specific expired stock they tried?

Hold up a sec, that Kodak Gold from 2001 would actually be expired about 23 years by now, not just from 1998. The colors change a lot based on how it was stored too, hot storage makes them way more washed out. Your friend got lucky with that thrift find because a lot of old film from that era is just totally dead.

Oh man, that's a great point about storage conditions. I had almost the same exact thing happen with a roll of Fuji Superia that expired in 2005, but it came out of a camera bag that had been sitting in a hot attic for years. The colors were so washed out it looked like a dream sequence from a 90s movie, honestly kinda cool but not what I expected. Your friend really scored with that thrift store find, its a total gamble most of the time with old film like that. Its wild how much the environment matters, I guess we take climate controlled storage for granted.
