That convo with my buddy about filler episodes hit different

I was ranting to my friend Matt about skipping filler arcs in One Piece, and he just goes, 'You're missing the whole point of the journey.' He said the G-8 arc from 2002 was his favorite part of the whole show. It made me stop and think-am I just speedrunning anime instead of actually enjoying it? Have you guys ever had someone change how you watch a show with one dumb comment?

Matt's got a point about that G-8 arc, but did he ever actually explain what he gets out of those slower parts that you seem to miss?

Matt's onto something there, but he probably doesn't see what the slower parts do for the bigger picture. I've been in that spot before where a buddy swore a stretch was boring until I walked him through it scene by scene... once you realize those quieter moments are setting up payoff later, it clicks. Try asking him what his favorite moment from a slower episode is, bet he'll name something that only works because of the build up. The trick is showing how the tension in those parts makes the big moments hit harder. He might come around if you point out how a single line or a look in those scenes changes everything later on.
