Went to Anime NYC and nobody watched the screenings, just talked the whole time

Last Saturday I paid 65 bucks for a badge and sat in a small screening room for a classic Gundam film. About 12 people were in there, and 9 of them were having full volume conversations about their cosplay plans. I asked one guy to quiet down and he said "the movie is on the big screen later anyway." Has anyone else noticed the con crowd treats screening rooms like a lobby instead of a theater? What do you do in that spot without being the rude one?

Is it just me or has basic respect for shared spaces gone completely out the window? I see the same thing at movie theaters and even concerts now, people act like the event is just background noise for their own conversation. Honestly, if you paid for a ticket and want to actually watch something, you're the one who has to play hall monitor, which is a lose-lose situation.
