When a forum comment changed how I discuss anime pacing
About 6 months ago someone in a seasonal thread told me I was just hating on slow burn shows because I kept comparing everything to a 12 episode format, and honestly they had a point. I started rewatching stuff with a notes app open, jotting down what actually dragged versus what was just deliberate build up. Do you think pacing criticism should be based on intent or just on how it feels live week to week?
Man, that's a whole lot of thinking for something that usually just makes me fall asleep by episode 3. I tried the notes app thing once and all I wrote down was "why is the guy staring at a cup of tea for 4 minutes" and "there's no way this is build up, this is just the animators saving money." Honestly, live week to week is the real test for me. If I'm checking my phone during the "deliberate" parts, then it's dragging, no matter what the creator intended.
