That keratin treatment I got cost me $300 and ruined my hair for 6 months

I went to a new salon last spring and the stylist talked me into a keratin treatment... said it would make my frizz disappear. Well, it did the opposite. My hair got so flat and brittle I had to cut 4 inches off. Has anyone else had a bad reaction to those treatments? What do you use instead for frizz control?

My buddy called The Room a masterpiece and it actually made me think

Last weekend my friend Dave said The Room is basically a perfect movie because it makes you feel something real even if it's confusion and laughter. He argued that most big budget films are forgettable but everyone remembers Tommy Wiseau's weird accent and that ridiculous rooftop scene. It hit different because I always just laughed at it but he made me see there's some weird artistry in how honest the bad acting is. Anyone else ever had a conversation that totally flipped how you see a so bad it's good movie?

Picked up a free old window from the dump and turned it into a cold frame

I was at the local recycling center last weekend and spotted a wooden window frame someone tossed, so I grabbed it and built a cold frame for my lettuce seedlings. It cost me zero dollars and my plants are already looking sturdier than the ones I started indoors under lights. Has anyone else repurposed old windows or doors for garden projects?

That blowout in the Gulf back in 2011 still sticks with me

I was doing a pipeline inspection 60 feet down off the coast of Louisiana when my drysuit seal let go. Cold water flooded in fast and I had to abort the dive in about 30 seconds. My tender pulled me up quick and we got me warm, but it took me a year to trust that suit again. Anyone else had a seal fail on them mid-job?

That time I discovered coffee shops actually lose money on my $4 latte

I was reading a report from some business journal while waiting for my pour-over at a local place in Portland, and it said most cafes only make about 10 cents profit per drip coffee after you factor in rent and labor. Made me feel a little guilty about camping here for 3 hours on a single cup - has anyone else looked into how much their regular spot actually needs people to spend?

PSA: My sister told me my cookies were too flat, so I chilled the dough for 2 hours before baking

She pointed out the butter was too warm before I even started, and now my cookies come out thick and chewy instead of flat disks. Anyone else have a sibling who gives brutally honest baking feedback?

The $2.50 bread machine I found on a curb turned out to be a beast

I was walking home from my shift last Tuesday and saw this beat up bread machine sitting by a trash can with a free sign. Honestly, I laughed at first because who actually uses those things besides grandmas? But I hauled it home anyway because hey, free is free. Cleaned off the caked on dough and gave it a test run with some basic flour and yeast I had around. That loaf came out perfect, better than anything I've bought at the store in months. I've been using it twice a week now for sandwich bread and pizza dough, and it's saved me like $20 so far on bakery stuff. Has anyone else picked up something they were totally skeptical about and it ended up working great?

Saturn's rings looked like a blurry blob through my $40 telescope last night

Got a Celestron FirstScope last Christmas and kept putting off using it. Finally dragged it out to my backyard in Phoenix around 10pm. Spent 20 minutes trying to focus on Saturn and all I got was a smeared dot with a hint of something around it. My neighbor's kid has the same scope and his photos online look way better. Is it just my terrible eyesight or do these cheap scopes need some kind of trick to get them working right? Anyone else had this problem with a low end scope?

That fence line I did in 2016 vs the one I redid last month... wow

So I put up a cedar privacy fence for a client back in 2016 over in Maplewood... used those cheap steel posts from the big box store. Last month they called me back because the whole thing was leaning bad after some storms. I ripped it all out and replaced the posts with galvanized schedule 40 pipe I got from a local metal supply place for about $4 more per post. The difference is night and day. The old posts had rusted through at the ground line and the rot had spread up the cedar panels. New ones are set in concrete with gravel drainage and the whole line is rock solid. I even used the same stain color to match their garden. Has anyone else switched away from those standard fence posts to something heavier?

Dude called me out for grabbing rusty furniture, now I check for lead paint first

I used to just snag any old cool-looking chair off the curb near my place in Philly, but last month a guy at the transfer station pointed out that pre-1970s stuff often has lead paint and said I was 'bringing poison into my house.' He showed me a pic of his test kit turning bright pink on a vintage dresser and I realized I'd been totally clueless. How do you guys quickly check if something is safe to sand or refinish without buying a whole testing lab?
