Showerthought: guy told me he charges for the diagnosis even when the fix takes 2 minutes
Was picking up a drain pump at the parts counter in Mesa last Tuesday and the guy next to me said he bills a $89 diagnostic no matter what, even if he just resets a breaker and walks out. I used to eat that fee when the fix was easy because I felt bad, and I've probably left $600 on the table this year doing that. He said the trip, the truck, and the 20 minutes of driving are the real work, not the 2 minute fix. I tried it on a dishwasher call in Chandler on Friday where the latch was just stuck, charged the fee, and the lady still tipped me $20. How do you all handle the easy ones, flat fee or hourly?

Flat fee saved me this year, plain and simple. I was doing the same thing, waving the fee when it was a loose wire or a clogged filter, and my wife finally asked why I was working for free half the time. Now the fee covers my drive and my time no matter what the job turns into, and nobody has pushed back once, same as your dishwasher lady.
