A Roman coin changed my mind about metal detecting
Used to think detectorists were just treasure hunters. No offense to anyone here. Then I met this guy Bill at a dig site outside Austin last spring. He pulled out this dirty little bronze piece. Turned it over. Pointed at a few letters I couldn't read. Said it was a Roman coin from like 300 AD. But we were in Texas. Nothing Roman anywhere near here. He explained it probably came over with some collector in the 1800s, got lost. Told me the soil stains tell a story too. How the patina looked wrong for local stuff. That changed how I see the whole hobby. It's not about gold or glory. It's about tracing how junk moves through time. He spent 20 minutes showing me the ridges on that thing. No big reveal. Just a guy who loved reading tiny marks. Anyone else had a moment where a small artifact shifted your view of the whole field?.
