Spent 6 hours cleaning a Roman coin that was actually a button
Found this thing in a field near Bath last summer. Thought I had a silver denarius. Got home, started the gentle cleaning with distilled water. Nothing happened. Tried electrolysis for an hour. Still nothing. Got out the magnifying glass and realized it was a 19th century military button with the face completely worn off. All that work for a button. Has anyone else spent way too long on something that turned out to be junk?

Oh man, @norag55 you're not wrong about the magnet trick for finding them, but that only works if the drive is steel. A lot of these newer external drives use aluminum or plastic casings, so the magnet just slides right off and does nothing. Plus if the drive is actually spinning and you slap a strong magnet on it, you might scramble the data even worse. Really the best first move for a dead drive is to check if it makes any sounds at all. If it clicks or buzzes, a magnet won't help and you're better off just sending it to a recovery lab.
