The $18 palette I almost tossed turned out to be my favorite mixing surface
Bought a cheap plastic palette from a big box store about 8 months ago. Hated it at first. Paints slid around and it flexed too much under pressure. Almost threw it in the trash twice. Then I realized I was using it wrong. I was holding it flat on the table. Once I started using it in my lap with one hand bracing the edge, it worked perfect. The wells are shallow but that actually stops me from overloading paint. A friend at a paint night in Columbus saw me using it and asked if I regretted the purchase. Told her I saved $30 by not buying the wooden one I had my eye on. Anyone else find a cheap tool that just needed a different angle?

That little trick about bracing the edge makes so much sense, I saw a similar tip in a printmaking forum where people use cheap plastic palettes for mixing ink. They said the flex is actually a feature if you push from underneath, keeps your brush hand steadier. Also, shallow wells forcing you to mix smaller batches, that is a real game changer for sure. I ended up drilling a tiny hole in the corner of mine so it hangs on a pegboard near my sink, zero regrets.
