Finally got a clear answer on a tricky tax deduction after three hours on hold with the IRS.
The agent explained that my painting truck qualifies as a 'listed property' for business use, which changed my mileage log from a vague guess to a specific 75% deduction after tracking every trip for a full quarter.

Listed property" sounds so official. My tax records are mostly just a pile of gas station receipts I found in my glove box.

My old accountant told me to keep a small notebook in the cup holder and just jot down the odometer reading and a quick note for every single trip, even the two-mile ones. It feels silly at first, but after a few weeks it becomes a habit and saves you from that year-end receipt panic. The IRS really does want to see that daily log if they ever ask. I switched to a simple spreadsheet on my phone, which is basically the same thing but harder to lose than a napkin with numbers on it.

Didn't the IRS say a log is the only real proof they accept? Makes sense to just do it right from the start. I use a notes app for the same reason.
