Had a run-in with a moldy AC unit at a motel off I-40 in Oklahoma

Stopped at a cheap motel during a road trip and woke up with my throat feeling raw, saw the AC vent was caked in black mold when I pulled the filter out. Manager shrugged and said they clean them twice a year which is obviously a lie. Has anyone else dealt with hidden mold in hotel rooms and found a way to check for it quickly on the spot?

Oh man, that's rough. A buddy of mine found mold in a motel bathroom last year, he just used his phone's flashlight and looked behind the shower curtain rod and the AC vent cover first thing from now on.

Oh jeez, that's a solid trick with the flashlight. My old man used to do the same thing when we'd stay at roadside places on road trips. He'd check the ice machine too, said if the ice looks weird or smells funky, the whole place is probably a mess. Never really thought about the AC vent cover though, that's a good spot to check. Last time I was at a motel in Ohio, I found a half eaten bag of chips behind the nightstand, made me wonder what else was lurking. Feels like you gotta do your own little inspection before you even unpack your bag these days.

Yep, flashlight trick works. I always pull the vent cover off and check with my phone light before settling in.
