Shoutout to the old guy at the observatory who changed how I see moon photos

Last week I was at a public viewing night at a local astronomy club and this retired engineer, probably 70, pulled up a photo he took of the moon with just a smartphone through a $200 scope. He said 'everyone chases nebulas but the moon tells you right away if you actually know what you're doing.' Honestly it hit different because I've been spending months trying to get a decent shot of Andromeda and my moon pics are still blurry trash. Made me realize I skipped the basics trying to go straight for the flashy stuff. Has anyone else had a moment where someone older humbled you about your technique?

Did that old guy walk you through his setup, or did you just have to piece it together from what he said?

Wait, did he actually let you look through the scope or just show you the photo? @john430 I've had pretty much the same thing happen with an older astro guy at a star party. He told me to stop trying to stack deep sky frames until I could get a clean moon shot with my phone. So I spent a whole weekend just practicing focusing and timing on the moon, and it totally changed how I handle my mount now. The trick is to use a timer or remote shutter even for the moon, because your finger tap shakes everything. Also, if your moon shots are blurry, try backing off the zoom a little and crop later, a lot of scopes just cant hold steady at max magnification.
