Used to call every restaurant in Atlanta one by one, now I just check the health score site
For real, until 2019 I was that person calling ahead to a new spot in Decatur or Kirkwood just to ask if they were open and if the kitchen was still running. Wasted so many Friday nights. I would sit in my car on Ponce, dial the number, get a busy signal, try again, then just drive to the same three places I already trusted. Then a guy at my barber shop on Moreland put me onto the Fulton County health inspection lookup. You type the name and you get the score, the last visit date, and what they got dinged for. Now I will straight up skip a place sitting at a 72 with a food temp violation, even if everybody swears the wings are amazing. I mapped out a whole route on Buford Highway one weekend using just those scores and hit four spots in two hours. Does anybody else actually check that before trying somewhere new, or am I the only one doing this?
Wait, do you cross-check the scores against how recently they got inspected though? A place could be sitting on an A from eight months ago and be a totally different kitchen now, or the opposite where they got slammed last week and already fixed it. I feel like the date next to the score matters way more than the number itself, but I never see people bring that up.
